GSMD Governor General Honoured Guest at 2014 Special Spring Dinner
Bruce C. MacGunnigle, 32nd Governor General of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants and his wife Kate, were special guests on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at a special spring dinner in Toronto. Members were very pleased to meet and speak with Bruce. During the evening, new member Rosemary Billings received her membership certificate and Gary Bennett received his latest certificate, having now proved his descent from six Mayflower passengers. In addition, former recording secretary Deborah Clarke was recognized for her 30 years of volunteer service to the Society. View the photo gallery here.
CSMD’s 25th Anniversary: Father James S. McGivern Memorial
On September 14, 2005, a memorial to our society’s founder, Father James S. McGivern, was dedicated on the grounds of the Mayflower Museum House in Plymouth, Massachusetts, to commemorate our 25th anniversary. Father McGivern was the driving force behind the formation of our of the Canadian Society of Mayflower Descendants in 1980. It is fitting to have him remembered in the land of our pilgrim ancestors. This memorial lets visitors to the Mayflower Society House grounds know that the Canadian Society of Mayflower Descendants exists and that we are proud of our Mayflower heritage.
The CSMD purchased an ornamental tree to replace a damaged tree on Mayflower Society House’s grounds. The tree chosen blooms in the late summer and fall (large balls of blossoms that start out white, then slowly turn a deep crimson red), which means it is in its glory during the General Society of Mayflower Descendants Congresses held in Plymouth every third September. A stone memorial is beneath the tree (see photo above). Approximately 60 CSMD members and friends attended the dedication. We were also honoured to have several special guests of the General Society attend, including Past Governors General Robert Davis, Eugene Fortine and Robert Greene (and their wives), and Past Assistant Governor General Donald West.
Several CSMD members generously contributed to a fund to cover costs of the tree and stone and were acknowledged with a special mention in our anniversary book.
